What is America Online?

America Online is a telecommunications and information service provided by Quantum Computer Services, Inc.   Your America Online software for your Macintosh computer connects you to extensive computing support, software libraries, computer forums, technical product databases, news from Apple, electronic mail, message boards, travel and stock services, news and sports, and an extensive chat and conferencing area.

WHAT DO I NEED TO GET ONLINE?

All you'll need is:  America Online software, a Hayes or Hayes-compatible modem, a modem cable to connect your modem to your computer, a working telephone line--and, of course, your Macintosh computer.

WILL I NEED A MANUAL?

No, America Online is very easy to use and "help" is built right into the software.

In addition to right here, there is help available online in our FREE What's New & Online Support area.  There you can check your bill, post questions, or refer to our Members' Online Guide, which contains everything you'd want to know about being a member of America Online.  Also, you can find "Guides" in the People Connection Lobby during evening and weekend hours; they can answer any questions you have on the spot.  Finally, if you're really stumped, called our Customer Relations Department at [phone] from noon to 3 a.m. EST.

HOW DO I BECOME A MEMBER?

If you haven't signed on to America Online yet, you can do so easily.  Have your registration certificate that came with your software and either a MasterCard, Visa, or a checking account number handy.  (If you wish to use the checking account option, your bank must be located in the United States).

Then, getting started is easy!  Just click on the "Sign On" button and follow the step-by-step procedures.  You'll be connected to our computer via a toll-free number.  Then, we'll help you set up your modem and phone information so that signing on to America Online anytime is as easy as 1-2-3.

WHAT SHOULD I DO ONCE I'M ONLINE?

There are many options for your first visit.  Choose any of our "Departments" to browse through our service offerings.  But there's one place you absolutely shouldn't miss:  People Connection.

America Online is the central online meeting place for Apple computer owners, and People Connection is where you can "chat" with other America Online members and meet people from around the country with similar interests.

There are other ways to communicate with your fellow America Online members:  you can send and receive electronic mail; you can send and receive Instant Messages -- "live" messages to and from other members; you can join group discussions; and, you can join clubs where you'll meet members who share your interests.  After you get online and explore the system, you'll see how easy it is to participate.

You'll find that exploring is simple on America Online since you'll encounter familiar icons, pull-down menus, and windows.  So, get online and wander about!
